NYALA (Tragelaphus
angasii) is between the Bushbuck and the Kudu in both
size and looks. They are found in North eastern South Africa,
southern and central
Mozambique and southern and northern Zimbabwe. They are primarily
browsers
therefore the majority of their diet consists of leaves but they also eat
freshly
sprouted grass, fruit, flowers and pods. Nyala are very shy and
secretive antelope
which makes hunting them very difficult, as they tend to stick to the
thick bush.
They live in small herds and eat during the day and night. When the
Nyala bulls
fight this is preceded by a display which involves raising the crest on
the back, thus
making the animal looking much bigger than he really is. In these
fight it is the male
which the longest hair that often wins. The principal enemy of Nyala
is the Leopard
which also occurs in the Nyala natural habitat..
